The messages are relatable and show children that not only should they not feel ashamed of their own differences, but that the people close to them should embrace them and make sure they feel included. Shortly, though, the mother and baby ducks return to find a way that Dino Duckling can also go south with them, in a way that does not involve flying.ĭino Duckling has colorful illustrations and a loveable main character. Soon, his family wants to go south for the winter, and Dino Duckling is unable to follow because he cannot fly. Even though his mother treats him the same, he does run, jump or fly the same ways as the others. From the moment he hatches, Dino Duckling feels different from his feathered siblings. The illustrations are absolutely darling, and JJ went wild for them, ESPECIALLY Dino (you can see her showing them to her own Mr. I especially liked that it noted how, even with love and support from family, being different can still be hard on the unique it shows kids that sometimes being frustrated or sad with what sets them apart is natural and fair. When it comes to complicated issues in children’s books, sometimes the simplest version of the story is best, especially when it has the degree of honesty that this one has. But family is family, no matter what – and family never leaves one of their own behind. As his mother and siblings lift off, Dino sinks down and cries, imagining they have finally left him.
